“Whenever it rains, I think of my friends from the market whom I used to sleep on the streets with, and I say a prayer for them, hoping they are safe.” Awushetu, a 28-year-old from Ghana, faced devastating circumstances as a young person. First, when she was still in school, she lost her father. Not long after, she found herself sleeping on the streets in an unfamiliar city as she worked odd jobs to provide for her newborn, siblings, and mother back home. But through Get Into, an employer-led training course offered by The King’s Trust that connects young people to meaningful career pathways, Awushetu was able to build up her self-esteem and soft skills such as communication and problem solving. As a result of Get Into, she landed a live-in job as a receptionist with a local guesthouse so that she could support her family. ”I want to be living proof that it is possible to rise above one’s circumstances and achieve success,” Awushetu says. ❤️ We loved hearing Awushetu’s story at our Global Gala in New York in the spring.
